Meta has expressed interest in opening an office in Dhaka, with discussions also covering e-commerce, online businesses, digital safety and cooperation with Bangladeshi institutions.
Meta, the parent company of Facebook and WhatsApp, has expressed interest in opening an office in Dhaka as it explores opportunities to expand its operations in Bangladesh, State Minister for Foreign Affairs Shama Obayed Islam said.
Speaking at a press conference at Bangladesh’s Permanent Mission to the United Nations in New York on Tuesday, September 22, Shama Obayed said Bangladesh held a productive meeting with Meta, where the possibility of establishing an office in Dhaka was discussed.
According to the state minister, Meta is interested in making Dhaka a focal point for its operations in Bangladesh. The company’s interest was also linked to Bangladesh’s large Facebook user base and the country’s growing online business market.
The meeting also covered Bangladesh’s Cyber Security Act and potential cooperation in expanding e-commerce and online businesses, she said.
Meta is also interested in working with educational institutions in Bangladesh, particularly on initiatives aimed at reducing digital harassment, according to the state minister. The company is expected to review the possibility of opening an office in Dhaka and provide further information later.
The discussion took place during Prime Minister Tarique Rahman’s visit to New York to attend the 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly. The prime minister was scheduled to attend the Meta meeting but could not participate due to time constraints, according to the state minister.
